What is the primary purpose of formative assessment in teaching?

This preparation test is designed to help you succeed in your interview for a Teacher role. Teachers are foundational to society, responsible for educating, inspiring, and guiding students to achieve their full potential. This resource provides common questions and expected answers to test your readiness for this critical and rewarding profession.

Type of Questions to Expect in a Teacher Interview

The teacher interview will assess your pedagogical knowledge, classroom management skills, and passion for education. Expect questions that fall into these key categories:
  • Pedagogy and Instruction: Your understanding of teaching methods, lesson planning, and adapting curriculum for diverse learners (e.g., How do you differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students in your classroom?).
  • Classroom Management: Your approach to creating a positive learning environment, establishing rules, and handling discipline and student behavior (e.g., Describe your philosophy on classroom management and how you build rapport with students.).
  • Assessment and Feedback: How you measure student progress, use data to inform instruction, and provide constructive feedback (e.g., How do you use formative and summative assessments in your teaching?).
  • Communication and Collaboration: Your ability to effectively communicate with parents, colleagues, and administrators (e.g., How would you handle a parent who disagrees with a student's grade or disciplinary action?).
  • Professional Growth and Ethics: Your commitment to continuous learning and adhering to professional standards (e.g., How do you stay current with new educational research and technology?).

What the Interviewer Will Expect

The interviewer is looking for a candidate who is:
  • Student-Centered: You demonstrate a deep commitment to putting students' learning and well-being first.
  • Knowledgeable in Your Subject: You can articulate strong knowledge of your content area and how to teach it effectively.
  • An Effective Manager: You can establish a structured, fair, and respectful classroom environment that minimizes disruptions.
  • Reflective Practitioner: You can analyze your own teaching, use data to improve, and embrace feedback.
  • A Collaborator: You are willing to work with grade-level teams, specialists, and the wider school community.

Tips on Getting Ready

  • Prepare Concrete Examples: Use the STAR Method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers, especially for questions about discipline or challenging situations. Instead of saying what you would do, describe what you have done.
  • Review Your Philosophies: Be ready to clearly articulate your teaching philosophy and your classroom management philosophy. They should be consistent and reflect current best practices.
  • Bring Artifacts: While not always required, having a portfolio (physical or digital) with examples of strong lesson plans, assessment data showing student growth, or positive parent communication notes can powerfully support your answers.
  • Research the School: Know the specific school's mission, demographics, test scores, or special programs (e.g., IB, STEM focus). Tailor your answers to show how you fit their specific needs.
