Personal Assistant Interview Questions and Answers

Last updated: January 19, 2026
This guide is designed to help you prepare for a Personal Assistant (PA) interview and assessment. The Personal Assistant interview test is designed to see if you can handle the responsibility of managing someone else’s life and time. Unlike a general office role, this assessment focuses on your resourcefulness and discretion. The interviewer wants to know if you can stay one step ahead of their needs, handle private information securely, and keep their daily routine running without a hitch.

Type of Questions to Expect in a Personal Assistant Interview

In a PA interview, the questions often focus on "what if" scenarios and your ability to manage a wide variety of tasks:
  • Logistics & Travel: "Your principal’s flight is canceled at 10:00 PM on a Sunday. What are the first three things you do?"
  • Confidentiality & Trust: "How would you respond if a family member or business associate asked for sensitive information about the principal?"
  • Prioritization: "How do you decide between a personal errand (like picking up dry cleaning) and an urgent business request?"
  • Adaptability: "How do you handle a principal who frequently changes their mind or their schedule at the last minute?"
  • Technical Skills: Questions about your comfort with scheduling apps, travel booking platforms, and expense tracking.

What the Interviewer Will Expect

Because a PA works closely with an individual or family, the interviewer is looking for a specific "vibe" and skill set:
  • Total Discretion: You will see their bank statements, emails, and family matters. They need to know you are a vault.
  • Anticipation: The best PAs don't wait to be told what to do; they see a need (like a low stock of coffee or an upcoming birthday) and handle it beforehand.
  • Resilience: You may be asked to handle unusual or high-pressure requests. They need to see that you don't get flustered easily.
  • Professional Boundaries: Can you be friendly and supportive while remaining a professional employee?
  • Reliability: In this role, being "on time" is often being late. They expect 100% dependability.

Tips on Getting Ready

To show that you are the perfect support system, follow these steps:
  1. Prepare Your "Crisis" Stories: Have 2–3 examples ready using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) where you solved a major problem under pressure.
  2. Research the Principal: If you know who you will be assisting, research their business or public profile. Understanding their world helps you tailor your answers.
  3. Audit Your Tech: Be ready to discuss the apps you use for organization, such as Todoist, Trello, Google Calendar, or TripIt.
  4. Dress the Part: First impressions are vital for a PA. Dress in a way that reflects the professional environment of the person you are assisting.
  5. Think "Service": Frame your answers around how you can make the principal's life easier. Your goal is to give them back their most valuable resource: time.
